Guests: Jim Perkins introduced Alice, his wife; John Laudermilk introduced his neighbor, Jerry Anderson; Rev. Robinson is back, along with his LSC Vicky Oren; Rick Jacobus got fined for bringing his wife Bonnie for their anniversary; Mike Ballew made it for his bi-annual lunch.
Steve Dawson from the DTC club pitched their Oktoberfest event this Saturday, see flyer. He also mentioned that the DTC, So. Glenn and Platte Canyon clubs have formed a Partnership of clubs, that way they keep their legal separation.
Fines: Rick Jacobus; Steve Dawson for advertising (he is a Lawyer). Table Z (you figure it out) for talking.
Announcements: Gary returned this week, after a much needed vacation away from us.
Bill Benton and Jack Marshall both had some kind of surgery this week.
Flyer and sign-up sheet was passed out by Orian last week for the upcoming Dual Dist. Leadership Conference and Awards Luncheon Saturday, Sep 29. It appears Dick Mason, Rick Jacobus and Gary Athey we be attending this club funded event.
Rick Jacobus read a letter last week from Scott Pfaltzgraff of BSA Troop 263. He is going for Eagle Scout. To become an Eagle Scout, he has to complete a set of badge requirements, as well as a plan and execute a service project designed to help others. Veterans’ causes are something of great importance to him, his father recently survived throat cancer that was likely caused by prolonged exposure to burn pits during his nearly yearlong deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. His grandfather was a Vietnam Veteran and was diagnosed with service-related ALS, he passed away in 2012.
Scott’s project is to buy the Warrior Avs a new trailer for carrying their gear. Warrior Avs is a hockey team comprised of Veterans from Colorado Springs and the Denver area. All of the members of the team have physical disabilities as a result of their injuries. A new trailer after being retrofitted will allow the members better storage but also better access into the trailer, sometimes in a wheelchair.
He is looking for donations of approximately $7,000. Arapahoe Sertoma Sponsorship voted to donate $500 and the Foundation voted to donate another $500 to Scott.
UPDATE: Scott attended lunch today, along with his mother Amanda, to accept the 2 checks. He was very surprised by that amount because it put him over his goal so he will have a little extra for unknown cost and anything left over goes to the team. Way to go Scott, we are proud of you. Put your thinking caps on and come up with ideas for programs. Our Directors are running out of ideas. Also, how about some club events?
Sertoman of the Day: John Vierthaler filled in for the absent Program by expanding on his life story along with a couple comments about today’s issues on politics, 2 parent households etc.
A brief repeat from the past: John Vierthaler was more than happy to take the stage again today, as all good lawyers have to be. John was born in 1941, the son of Immigrants (he said he IS NOT a dreamer). His Father is from Austria and fought in WWI for the Kaiser. His mother was from the Austria-Hungarian Empire. They both immigrated to Pittsburgh, PA independently and met while they lived there. John was born in Pittsburgh and grew up on the Ohio River.
John went to Aspen Wall HS in Aspen Wall, PA. It was torn down about 10 years after he graduated. John went on to Grove City College in Grove City, PA., a private college founded by the heirs of the Sun Oil Company. It is a very independent college.
In 1963, he was in Air Force ROTC because they had mandatory military service and paid $30 a month. Graduated with a commission as a 2nd Lt. Spent 3 years in Atlanta, “defending our nation”. Went to Law School at Emery University in Atlanta, GA at night. Got out of the military and transferred all his credits to the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Law and graduated a year later. Worked for Alcoa as a corporate attorney. Later went to work for his father-in-law. By this time he was up to three kids. The family used to come up to Colorado to ski. After four years of trips, Brenda, his wife, convinced John to move to Colorado. He moved out with two adults, three kids, two dogs, and two cats. (They lost one of their cats in Russell, Kansas).
